This past summer I was lucky enough to spend a few days in the Poconos Mountains in Pennslyvania at a lake community called Lake Paupac Club. Motorboats aren’t allowed on the lake and houses are required to be set back from the lake so that when you’re on the lake, you really mostly just see woods. There are sailboat races on the weekends and social gatherings at the main lodge. It’s a neat place and I felt inspired to make a couple maps.
The first map is an abstract play on typography as geography. Whie I was there, I was struck by how everyone referred to locations around the lake by the cottage owners’ last names. Inlets, outlets, beaches and fishing spots can all be referenced by nearby cottages. I wanted to capture this shared geography by replacing the road lines with cottage names.
The second map was made using a hillshade and a GPX track from a hike I took around the lake.
